James W. Coons

Jim is the founder, a Principal, and Chief Compliance Officer of Coons Advisors. He is a portfolio manager and a member of the Investment Policy Committee, to which he contributes proprietary economic research.

Prior to founding the firm in 2003, Jim was Senior Vice President and Chief Economist for Huntington National Bank, where he had previously led the Investment Management Department. Jim also previously provided guidance to the Ohio Office of Budget and Management as Chairman of the Ohio Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors.

Jim was a founding member of the Board of Directors of the First Bexley Bank, where he also served as Chairman of the Asset-Liability Management Committee. He has taught Macroeconomics in the Executive MBA program of the Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University and Investment Management and Money and Banking at Capital University. The author of a book on interest rate forecasting, Jim has written extensively on the economy, financial markets and public policy for The Columbus Dispatch. His articles have also appeared in USAToday, the Chicago Tribune, Investor's Business Daily, and other major publications.

Jim has briefed Congressional staffers on Capitol Hill, advised the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland, and spoken about the economy and financial markets to audiences throughout the Midwest and around the country.

Jim has worked in the financial services industry since 1985. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double major in Economics and Mathematics from DePauw University. He graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Economics from Ohio University and graduated the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, where his thesis on predicting interest rates received the Stonier Library Award.
